The Workforce Training Fund
The Workforce Training Fund, is a grant program for employers to train their workers.
Its purpose is to
- To make Massachusetts businesses more competitive;
- To give workers the skills they need to succeed;
- To grow wages; and
- To increase employment in Massachusetts.
Training grants range in size from $2,000 to $250,000.
The fund's focus is on small to medium-sized companies. In fact, about 15% of all grants have been awarded to companies with fewer than 20 employees, and nearly 30% to companies with 50 or fewer employees. It is helpful to have a training provider already in mind when making an application so that they can help you with specifics. Please contact us if you are interested in any of our training programs.
Decisions are made about 2 months after the application deadline, so plan your training program for 4 months after the deadline. Although there is an upcoming March deadline for applications, funds have been cut for this fiscal year so fewer applications will be accepted. The next deadline date is in July and it is expected that funds will be back to normal operating levels by then. You can find out more by clicking here.

Another avenue that might work well for your small business is the Workforce Training Fund Express. It is a program designed for small employers and labor unions to quickly and simply provide training for employees. The program utilizes existing training courses where a pricing structure already exists.
The Express program is financed entirely by Massachusetts employers through contributions to the Workforce Training Fund. $1 million is available each state fiscal year. The Express Program requires 50% matching by the company but this is often provided in the form of wages paid while employees are training. $15,000 is available yearly to every company.
