Nov 6, Age Versus Social Responsibility.

This next thanks Rob Millard.

It is often said that social responsibility is primarily a trait of the younger Generation Xs and Generation Ys, certainly not those Baby Boomers over the age of 60. They're the ones that polluted the environment and caused all those wars, remember?

Here's a data set, though, that seems to fly in the face of that assumption. (Click on link below.)

The Seattle Longitudinal Study (SLS) has tracked a group of people (18,000 in the original sample) in Seattle, USA every seven years for over 45 years. The original intent of the study was organized around five questions:

1. Does intelligence change uniformly throughout adulthood or are there different life-course-ability patterns?

2. At what age and at what magnitude can decrement in ability be reliably detected?

3. What are the patterns and magnitude of generational differences?

4. What accounts for individual differences in age-related change in adulthood?

5. Can the intellectual decline that increases with age be reversed by educational intervention?

The graphic (at the link below) comes from pages 287 - 289 of the latest report on the study (Schaie, 2005.) It shows a fascinating trend in the directly observed trait of social responsibility. The trend lines are from the 1963 and 1970 studies (the purple and the red line respectively) and the most recently published data, from 1991 and 1998 (the green and dark blue lines.) The lines indicate the level of social responsibility across the various age cohorts in each of the four studies.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, it seems there was a trend where social responsibility decreased steadily from age 50 - 60 and onwards. However, for today's adult population, a very different picture exists. The data indicates that the level of social responsibility INCREASES STEADILY WITH AGE, with those in their 20s being the lowest and those over 65 the highest. The difference between the two early trend lines and the two most recent trend lines is at its most pronounced after age 60.

Are today's 'baby boomers' really more socially responsible than Gen Y's? If true, perhaps other assumptions about generational differences also need to be challenged.

Nov 6, The Kobre Guide, a new way to find quality journalism on the net.

Here's how the Kobre Guidedescribes itself:

"This project is an antidote to comprehensive Web video portals, such as YouTube and MetaCaf. We're focusing instead on handpicked, high-quality documentary-style journalism that is being produced primarily by major media outlets -- and frustratingly difficult for consumers to find.

We're a "curated" site (to use the latest buzzword, now that "edited" seems to have lost favor), which means that we're relying on discerning eyes and ears of people like YOU (and not search engines or web bots) to help alert and point us to the creme de la crme.

We've already located scores of prizeworthy multimedia gems to showcase at launch, and now we're soliciting input from smart folks like you, who are in a position to know about and share the good stuff out there.

Criteria? ... Think "60 Minutes" TV newsmagazine-style journalism (NOT daily news or event coverage) -- but geared for the Web... Mainly video, but also compelling audio-slideshows, or a hybrid thereof.

In short: True (nonfiction) journalism Web multimedia stories of the highest professional quality."

Michael Wesch, an assistant professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University, has posted a captivating and incisive 4-minute and 31-second video explaining the basic premise of Web 2.0, concluding that Web 2.0 is primarily about linking people. But it is the journey of this video that is the reward -- "Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us."

Nov 6, Turning Limitations into Innovation.

Creativity is often misunderstood. People often think of it in terms of artistic work -- unbridled, unguided effort that leads to beautiful effect. If you look deeper, however, you'll find that some of the most inspiring art forms -- haikus, sonatas, religious paintings -- are fraught with constraints. They're beautiful because creativity triumphed over the rules. Constraints shape and focus problems, and provide clear challenges to overcome as well as inspiration. Creativity, in fact, thrives best when constrained.

This is a quote from the article by Marissa Ann Mayer, Vice President search products and user experience at Google from the 2/1/06 edition of Business Week online. The article makes interesting reading.

Sep 5, Seven Steps to Mend Broken Relationships

Although the example is litigation related the advice given works well for any broken relationship.

The steps are:

Decide. The first step is you must decide that you want to improve the relationship. The precursor to this step is recognition - recognizing that the relationship needs improving - but the heart of this is the decision that this relationship matters enough for you to make the effort required to improve it. Without this decision, nothing else matters.

Forgive or let it go. If you feel the other person has done something to cause the rift or break-down, you must either forgive them or let go of your issues with it. Without this step, the steps that follow may help some, but will be limited in their success.

Take ownership. Recognize your role in the relationship, and take ownership and responsibility for it. Yes, deciding and forgiving are accountability actions; but being clear that regardless of the situation you have played a role in the change to the relationship is critical to your success in repairing any damage.

Make your intention clear. Once you have decided to take action to improve the relationship, your behavior will change. Take the time to explain your decision and your intention to improve the relationship.

Assume positive intent. Assume the other person was - and is - acting in good faith. Will you be wrong sometimes? Perhaps. But by starting from this assumption you will immediately change your perception and therefore your behaviors toward that person.

Listen more. We all know how important listening is and how good it makes us feel when we are truly being listened to. Grant that gift to the other person.

Make an effort. Deciding is one thing. Doing is quite another. If you want better relationships, you must make the effort - it will seldom, if ever, happen automatically.

Sep 5, Settling is Better

A new about to be released study of civil lawsuits has found that most of the plaintiffs who decided to pass up a settlement offer and went to trial ended up getting less money than if they had taken the settlement offer. Defendants also made the wrong decision by proceeding to trial but less often, in 24 percent of cases, according to the study; plaintiffs were wrong in 61 percent of cases. In just 15 percent of cases, both sides were right to go to trial meaning that the defendant paid less than the plaintiff had wanted but the plaintiff got more than the defendant had offered.

The study is to be published in the September issue of the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies. The findings are based on a study of 2,054 cases that went to trial from 2002 to 2005.
On average, getting it wrong cost plaintiffs about $43,000; although the total may be more because information on legal costs was not always available. For defendants, who were wrong less often about going to trial, the cost was much greater -- $1.1 million. As part of the study, which is the biggest of its kind, the authors surveyed trial outcomes over 40 years through 2004. They found that over time, poor decisions to go to trial have actually become more frequent.

The findings are consistent with research on human behavior and responses to risk, according to Martin A. Asher of the University of Pennsylvania, a co-author. Psychologists have found that people are more averse to taking a risk when they are expecting to gain something, and more willing to take a risk when they have something to lose. If you approach a class of students and say, Ill either write you a check for $200, or we can flip a coin and I will pay you nothing or $500, most students will take the $200 rather than risk getting nothing. But reverse the situation, so that students have to write the check, and they will choose to flip the coin, risking a bigger loss because they hope to pay nothing at all, theyll take the gamble.
