Chatham Village

Chatham village, or downtown, is very walkable and picturesque. It is lined with interesting and unusual shops housed in well-maintained, one and two story 18th century buildings. There are no parking meters downtown! Drivers actually stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

Everyone who comes to visit comments on the picture-perfect streets are lined with Cape Cod cottages and glorious gardens. When they filmed the movie, The Golden Boys, here last year, the only thing they did to downtown before shooting was to move the cars, put hay on the ground, and change some of the signs over the stores.

The Chatham Town Band upholds a tradition started in 1931. It took a two year hiatus for World War I. The Band shut down again in December of 1941 with the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

It was revived after the war by W. Whitney Tileston who coordinated the band's weekly performances for 48 summers until his death at age 89. Beloved for his bubbly personality, his modesty and his sense of humor, the bandstand was named in his honor on his 80th birthday. Now there are about 35 members from all over the Cape in the Chatham Town Band.
